Rig-Veda describes the sarawathi river as a mighty flowing river. It dried up around the 2000BCE and the process of drying starts 3000BCE or after the Rig-Veda had written. There is nothing in the Rig-Veda that SR is demolishing but in the Mahabharata we do find the SR is decreasing a shorten course.

From other researches we have found that the whole of the SR dried about 2000 to 1800 BCE and was at least a few small lakes in the Harappan civilization called Kalibangan that sites along the banks of the saraswathi, after hydrological investigations (1968)reveals that it was abandoned because of the drying up of the river and this is happened because of the Beta-Markanda Terrace in the Himalayas. Even the panchavimsha Brahmana mentioned the drying up of saraswathi.Radiocarbon dates also shows the Kalibangan was abandoned around 2000BCE.
Researches explained that the demise of SR was caused by the lack of water it had previously received from Yamuna which had changed its cause to flow eastward in to the Ganga.Then the Sutlej also turned southwest, while the glacial melt decreases all of which greatly weekends the flow of SR.This results the SR disappearing into the desert at the place called Vinashana or Samantha-Panchaka in the Mahabharata before it reaches to the sea.
The worldwide drought around 2200 to 1900 BCE creates not only imputes in Harappa but also in the civilization like Egypt, Sumer-Akkad in the Mesopotamia thus the people forced to abandon this area and rise of the small political groups known as Ganapandas which describes in the Buddhist and the Jain literature.
